What patients should know about constipation and diarrhea
Constipation and diarrhea are often common, short-term complaints, but when the problem becomes chronic, our Plano gastroenterologist can help. Michael Weisberg MD is a board certified gastroenterologist with nearly three decades of experience and knowledge. Dr. Weisberg believes in personalized care and treats all of his patients himself. Patients see the physician at every visit and will never see a nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant.
Patients with chronic constipation and diarrhea should see a physician
When the digestive tract is not functioning normally, constipation and diarrhea occur. Often, these bowel problems are acute, meaning they occur suddenly as a result of an infection or virus. Other times, these abnormal bowel habits become chronic. When bowel movements are not normal for a sustained amount of time, patients should see our Plano gastroenterologist for diagnosis and treatment. When certain symptoms are present, it is imperative to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
- Weight loss
- Rectal bleeding
- Blood in the stool

Common causes of abnormal bowel movements
Several conditions cause constipation and diarrhea. For example, chronic constipation can result from any of these situations.
- A diet that is too low in fiber
- Lack of exercise or physical activity
- Certain medications, including narcotics and iron supplements
- Pregnancy
- Continually ignoring the need to have a bowel movement
- Calcium supplements
- Diabetes
- Thyroid disease
- Depression
- High calcium levels
Acute diarrhea can occur for several reasons, including viral, bacterial or parasitic infections, contaminated food or water ingested or as a side effect of a medication. Multiple problems cause chronic diarrhea.
Health problems and illnesses can also cause chronic problems
Constipation and diarrhea may also be a sign or the result of a more serious illness or disease.
Constipation can be the result of a neurological injury or disease such as Parkinson’s disease or a spine injury. Diabetes and hypothyroidism also cause chronic constipation. Problems in the GI tract, such as a tumor or partial blockage, can cause problems as well.
Diagnosing the cause of constipation and diarrhea
Our Plano gastroenterologist begins his diagnosis of constipation and diarrhea by referring to a patient’s medical history and asking several questions. He also performs a thorough examination and may recommend additional tests to help determine the problem.
- Blood tests and stool tests
- Endoscopy
- Colonoscopy
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy
- Diagnostic imaging
